ABSTRACT PREPARATION OF 1-SUBSTITUTED AZETIDIN-3-OL DERIVATIVES A process for preparing 1-substituted azetidin-3-ol derivatives of formula: Image or an acid halide thereof, in which R1 is an aryl methyl group; and R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl or aralkyl group, which comprises (a) reacting an epoxy halide of formula: II Image in which Hal is a halogen atom, with a primary amine of formula: R1 - NH2 III (b) cyclising the resulting addition product of formula: R1 - NH - ?- ?- CH2 - Hal IV in an aqueous medium to form the acid halide of the compound of formula I, and (c) when the free hydroxy compound of formula I is required, treating said acid halide with a base. The compounds are intermediates e.g. for the preparation of azetidine-3-carboxylic acid derivatives which exhibit plant growth regulant properties.
