ABSTRACT Catalysts for the polymerization of olefins comprising the reaction product of an aluminum alkyl compound, an electron donor compound EDB and supported components. The electron-donor compound is reactive with MgC12 but does not form complexes with the aluminum alkyl compound. The catalyst components comprise a tetravalent titanium halogenated compound and an electron-donor compound EDA which are supported on titanium or vanadium trichloride or tribromide having a surface area of at least 100m2/mg. The electron-donor compound is characterized in that it is extractable with AlEt3 (under standard conditions) to an extent of at least 70 mole %. The catalysts are suitable for use in polymerizing olefins, particularly ethylene.
