ABSTRACT A lock nut for use on a bolt-like member with external thread means, the lock nut comprising a compressible spring means and an aperture extending through the spring means in a direction in which the spring means is compressible, the aperture being internally threaded with thread means, the thread means of the lock nut being complementary to external thread means of the bolt-like member when the spring means is compressed against the bias of the spring means to a pre-selected compressed position, The lock nut provides superior resistance to loosening as compared with known lock nuts. Advantageously the lock nut is provided as a unitary body. One axial end of the lock nut has a recessed shoulder so that even when this one end of the lock nut is forced into contact with an object to be retained between the lock and a head of the bolt-like member, the shoulder provides a surface whereby axially directed compressive forces may be applied to the lock nut to compress the same.
