ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE DRAWING INSTRUMENT A pair of compasses has a leg provided with a lower portion having a hole for receiving a pencil. The lower portion carries an axially rotatable plastics clamping ring which moves axially across the hole on rotation as it rides on a two part helical cam surface on an end stop. A pencil can be clamped in the hole by a wedging action of the ring in between the cam surface and the pencil.
