ABSTRACT Novel cardiotonic 2(lH)-pyridinones of general formula: Image (I) methods for their preparation and use are disclosed. Wherein: X represents M, F, Cl, Br, -CN or -CH2OH, -CO2R1, -CONR2R3 or -NR4R5, wherein R1 to R5, independently, represent H or C1-6alkyl and R1 addition- ally represents a pharmaceutically acceptable metal or amine cation; W and Y, independently, represent H or C1-6alkyl, and Z represents one of eleven amino, heterocyclic or substituted heterocyclic groups.
