SLAVE SHIP HANDLING ABSTRACT In order to expedite the passage of vessels through a locked canal system it is advantageous to eliminate the lines handling procedure and associated manoeuvring by introducing techniques long proven in the materials handling discipline. To this end powered rotarary cushion fenders are introduced along facing lock walls mounted on axes which can be extended towards one another across the width of the lock such that the cushion fenders will embrace between them any vessels entering or leaving the lock. The said axes are also arranged to follow the level of the water within the lock so that they will rise and/or fall with the vessel as the lock is filled or emptied. The cushion fenders are arranged to rotate in union for the purpose of feeding a vessel into or out of a lock without the assistance of the vessels own machinery or that of tugs. SPECIFICATON This invention relates to means for assisting a ship to transit one or more locks in a canal system by providing a plurality of opposed pairs of autorotatable fenders adjustably mounted in relation to the lock basin walls such that they may be relocated to suit the differing configuration of individual ship hulls entered between them for the purpose of locating, advancing, retarding, and stopping said ship hull or "Slave Ship" transmitting a lock so provided. One preferred such means is provided by equipping each lock basin with a plurality of pairs of opposed autorotatable fender wheels rotatable about movable vertical axes such that the perimeter of each said fender wheel may be brought into positive contact with one or other side of an entering "Slave Ship" hull to thereby locate and restrain said "Slave Ship's" hull between said opposed fender wheels and to thereby propel said "Slave Ship" through a lock system by rotation of said fender wheels without the intervention of the said "Slave Ship's" machinery or labour.
