ABSTRACT A dual flux path linear voice coil motor (VCM) for use as a disk file linear actuator has a magnetically permeable center core which is separated by non-magnetic insert into two sections spaced apart along a longitudinal axis parallel to the VCM's linear access direction. The center core has recessed parallel flat faces equally spaced on opposite sides of the longitudinal axis which form pockets in the center core. Permanent magnets are embedded in the pockets of the center core and span the space between the center core sections. The VCM generates an essentially constant force on the coil for a constant current, regardless of coil stroke position or direction of movement. SA987009
