ABSTRACT A fluid actuator comprises a cylindrical body defining an interior chamber within which is located a piston assembly which isolates fluid outlet means at one end of the chamber from fluid inlet means at the other end of the chamber. Assembly comprises a central cylindrical piston element concentrically surrounded by at least one annular piston element and is resiliently urged by spring to seat against the end of the body. Face seals are provided at end for respective piston elements and individual inlet ports penetrate the seals to provide for fluid delivery against individual piston elements. Adjoining piston elements incorporate a one-way mechanical connection so that spring enables all piston elements to be urged against end Selective application of fluid pressure to one or more of inlet ports enables displacement of one or more of the piston elements towards the outlet port thereby effecting selective volume displacement of fluid from chamber The actuator may be used to provide an incremental movement facility for a hydraulic motor which is also connected to a hydraulic power source for effecting normal continuous operation of the motor. When the motor is at rest the actuator can be energised to deliver a selected hydraulic volume to the motor thereby causing incremental rotation thereof by a corresponding amount.
