DECORATIVE ORNAMENTATION FOR A RUBBER ARTICLE AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME Abstract of the Disclosure An indicium (14) for a rubber article has at least one narrow groove (18) therein. The surface of the indicium is made of a rubber of a first color such that said narrow groove (18) is perceived as a narrow line of a color contrasting with the color of the surface of the rubber article. The indicium is surrounded by a recessed portion (17) made of a rubber having a color that is different from the color of the surface of the rubber article. The indicium is manufactured by the method of providing juxtaposed layers of elastomeric materials in the sidewall of an unvulcanized tire, forming a narrow groove in the portion of the sidewall where the indicium is desired, vulcanizing the tire, and then removing a portion of the outermost layer of elastomeric material.
