23410-300 ABSTRACT NEWCASTLE DISEASE VIRUS GENE CLONES The problem of providing rapid access to a polynucleotide encoding the HN and/or F protein of Newcastle Disease Virus RNA is solved, according to the invention, by recombinant DNA technology which has led to the cloning and sequencing of these genes. The invention provides such polynucleotides and, in particular, those of the Beaudette C viral strain and others sufficiently homologous therewith to enable the HN and F genes of other strains to be identified using Beaudette C DNA as a probe. The invention is useful in the diagnosis of Newcastle Disease and as a major step towards the production of viral proteins for use in vaccination of poultry.
