- 1 - SPECIFICATION Title of the Invention Process for the Preparation of 4-Chlorobenzenesulfonyl Chloride Abstract of the Disclosure A process for the preparation of 4-chloro- benzenesulfonyl chloride wherein chlorobenzene is reacted with chlorosulfonic acid in a halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon in the presence of an alkali metal salt of a mineral acid and/or an ammonium salt of a mineral acid. After washing the resulting reaction mixture with water and separating the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon layer, water is distilled off, together with -the halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon to obtain 4-chlorobenzenesulfonyl chloride in an anhydrous state. The anhydrous 4-chlorobenzene- sulfonyl chloride thus obtained can be converted into 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone by reacting it with chlorobenzene in the presence of a catalytic amount of ferric chloride.
