ABSTRACT Process for the synthesis of 1-substituted imidazole-5- carboxylic acids and carboxylic acid derivatives The invention relates to a process for the preparation of 1,5-disubstituted imidazoles of the formula Image (I) wherein L is, for example, carboxy or (C1-C7)alkoxycarbonyl and X is, for example, 1-indanyl or 1-tetrahydronaphthalenyl, by alkylation of an N-cyanoformamidine of the formula II X - NH - CH = N - CN (II) to form an N,N-disubstituted N'-cyanoformamidine of the formula Image (IV) which is cyclised under the action of bases to form a 4- aminoimidazole of the formula Image (V) and then reduced to form the product of the formula I. The invention relates also to a special process for the reduction of the aminoimidazole V to I, and to intermediate compounds for carrying out this process and to processes for the preparation of the intermediate compounds. The compounds produced by the process of the invention are useful as herbicides and plant growth regulators.
