ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel hydrophobic cotton cloths of alkyl or aryl polyhydroxy com- pounds, e.g. butyl, hexyl, octyl, decyl, dodecyl, phenyl, naphthyl or anthranyl on which enzymes can be immobilized, and their process of prepara- tion and method of use are provided herein. The process involves reacting the polyhydroxy compound with a bifunctional compound and with an alcohol, or with a phenol, in a single step in an aqueous basic solution. An enzyme is then immobilized on the hydrophobic cloth by absorption of a solution of the enzyme thereon. The enzyme which is so immobilized is stabilized thereon by means of a cross-linking agent. Preferably the bifunctional compound is epichlorohydrin and the cross-linking agent is glutaraldehyde.
