ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Fused phenylsulfonylchlorides of the formula (X) Image (X) wherein R1 is hydrogen, halogen, nitro, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C1-C4 alkoxy, C1-C4 haloalkoxy, C1-C4 alkoxycarbonyl, C1-C4 alkylthio, C1-C4 alkylsulfinyl, C1-C4 alkylsulfonyl or C2-C5 alkoxyalkoxy and A is an unsubstituted or substituted bridge of 3 or 4 atoms which contains 1 or 2 oxygen, sulfur or nitrogen atoms selected from the group consisting of -O-CH2-CH2-, -O-CO-CH2-, -O-CH2-CH2-CH2-, -O-CH2-O-, -CO-O-CH2- , -O-CH2-CH2-O-, -CH2-O-CO-CH2-,-O-CO-CH2-CH2-, -CO-O- CH2-CH2-, -O-CH2-CH2-CO-, -O-CH2-CO-CH2-, -S-CH2-CH2-, -SO-CH2-CH2-, -SO2-CH2-CH2-, -NH-CH2-CH2-, -S-CH2-CH2-CO-, -S-CH2-CH2-CH2-, -O-SO2-CH2-CH2- or -NH-CO-CH2-CH2-, wherein the substituents are selected from the group consisting of halogen, cyano, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 haloalkyl, C1-C4 alkylcarbonyl, C1-C4 alkoxycarbonyl, C1-C4 alkylthiocarbonyl, carbamoyl, C1-C4 alkylaminocarbonyl, di(C1-C4)alkylaminocarbonyl, C1-C4 alkylsulfonyl, C3-C5 alkenyl or C3-C5 alkynyl, and process for their preparation are disclosed. These compounds find use as intermediates in the preparation of herbicidally active compounds of the general formula I Image (I), which are pyrimidine (E=CH) or triazine (E=N) derivatives in which R2, R3 and R4 have a range of meanings, and Z is oxygen or sul- phur.
