ABSTRACT A DNA probe for detecting and identifying bacterial strains of the species Campylobacter jejuni is provided, together with a method for its use. The probe comprises a pair of single stranded DNA sequences, at least 20-base pairs in length, of oligonucleotides synthesized to be complementary to the 5' and 3' terminal ends of an Eco RI restriction fragment of the species Campylobacter jejuni. Under suitable conditions for hybridization the probe hybridizes selectively, only with bacteria of the species Campylobacter jejuni, but not with other Campylobacter or bacteria of other species. The method is used in testing medically and veterinary-wise for fecal presence in food and other transmission vehicles, to avoid the spread of disease in humans and in animals. The probe includes a colour "label" to establish the presence of a positive reaction.
