Abstract Weld bead analysis and electrode capable of producing same, which in multiple pass welding of thick steel plates, results in fine grain structure and high impact strength. The analysis includes as necessary ingredients, titanium, nitrogen and chromium with a maximum limitation on aluminum, if present. The electrode contains titanium and chromium. The welding is in air and the titanium picks up nitrogen from the air and carries it into the weld bead as micro particulates of titanium nitride, which forms nucleation points for commencing fine grain growth.
