?-1456 SURGICAL SPONGE ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A surgical sponge comprising, a sheet of open-mesh absorbent material being folded into a multiple ply configura- tion, with the folded sheet having an outer layer having an inner surface facing inwardly in the sponge, and an outer sur- face facing outwardly from the sponge. The sponge has an elon- gated relatively thin visually detectable element comprising a thermoplastic material heat bonded to the inner surface of the outer layer such that the element impregnates fibers of the sheet to prevent capture of blood between the outer layer and the element, and such that the element is visible on the outer surface of the outer layer, with the element having a color which contrasts with the color of blood to significantly increase the visibility of the sponge in a patient's body when saturated by body fluids.
