PRECIS DE LA DIVULGATION: L'invention concerne la synthèse de dithiols et plus particulièrement celle d'.alpha.,.omega.-dithiols contenant de 5 à 20 atomes de carbone. Le procédé selon l'invention consiste à faire réagir en présence d'un catalyseur acide solide, l'hydrogène sulfuré avec un di-(tertioalkylthio)alcane de formule générale (I): Image dans laquelle R représente un radical alkylène contenant de 5 à 20 atomes de carbone, et les symboles R1, R2 et R3, identiques ou différents, représentent chacun un radical alkyle contenant de 1 à 15 atomes de carbone. On obtient sélectivement l'alcane-dithiol et, comme sous-produit, un tertioalkyl-mercaptan qui peut être réutilisé dans un procédé cyclique pour produire le di-(tertioalkylthio)alcane de départ.
