A compound suitable for use as a surfactant in an emulsion of an aqueous phase and a water immiscible phase, said compound comprising the esterifiction product of polyalk(en)yl succinic anhydride and an adduct of the formula: Image where R1 is H or -CH2-CH2-OH and R2 is selected from the group consisting of an alk(en)yl or acyl group containing 8-20 carbon atoms in the backbone of the hydrocarbyl chain and a hydroxy ethyl ester of a mono- or di-carboxylic acid which has a hydrocarbyl chain containing from 8-20 carbon atoms in its backbone and, apart from the hydrocarbyl chain, has not more than 6 carbon atoms in the link to the N atom.
