14 ABSTRACT: "Thermo-magneto-optical recording device and recording element therefor". A thermo-magneto-optical recording device comprising a recording element having a substrate which bears a magneto-optically active layer, in which the magneto-optically active layer is present between a laser source which emits radiation in the wavelength range from 400 - 900 nm and a layer reflecting radiation from the laser source, means to focus radiation from the laser source onto selected places ofthe recording medium, and magneto-optical detection means placed in the path of the radiation returning from the magneto-optically active layer. The magneto-optically active layer comprises a polycrystalline, oxidic material based on Fe3+ having a spinel structure and a such thickness that destructive interference occurs between plane polarized radiation of the laser source returning from the surface of the layer and plane polarized radiation returning from the reflecting layer and having passed the active layer at least twice.
