ABSTRACT Disclosed is a circuit arrangement for the operation of a plurality of opto-electronic display elements such as light-emitting diodes to display for example the exchange and/or operating states in a telephone system, whereby the display elements are arranged in a matrix and may be operated via the matrix drive lines. The display elements are wired in such a way that there is a lower current consumption with the same operation via the matrix drive lines as compared to prior art arrangements. With the simultaneous operation of display elements in different matrix columns, these display elements are connected in series and with the use of the display elements from only one matrix column or with no display through a current limiter the appropriate terminating im- pedance is produced for the distant current supply of the display element. This results in the advantage that for the series connection of two display elements, one display element already represents a part of the series resistor otherwise necessary for each display element. For the partial operation of the display element with lines of different lengths an optimum input resistance for the current supply via the subscriber line is also given.
