Abstract of the Disclosure: Benzimidazolecarboxanilides of the formula (I) (I) Image where R1 and R2 are each H, Cl, alkyl, alkoxy, unsub- stituted or alkyl- or alkoxy-substituted phenyl or phenylalkyl, R3 and R4 are each H, uninterrupted or -O- interrupted alkyl or alkoxy, unsubstituted or alkyl- or alkoxy-substituted phenyl, phenylalkyl, phenoxy, phenyl- alkoxy, hydroxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxy, alkylcarbonylamino, alkanoyloxy, benzoylamino or benzoyloxy, X is alkylene, n is 1 or 2 and where - if n is 1 - R1 is Cl, -OR6 or -NR7R8 or - if n is 2 - R5 is -O-R12-O- or -N(R0)-R13-N(R9)- where R6 is H, unsubstituted, OH- or alkanoyloxy-substitu- ted alkyl whose carbon chain may be interrupted by -O- or -N(R9)-, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, phenylalkyl, phenoxyethyl, hydroxyalkyl, phenylhydroxyalkyl or glycidyl, R7 and R8 are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, naphthyl, alkenyl, phenylalkyl, hydroxyalkyl or -NR7R8, a saturated 5- or 6- membered heterocycle, R9 is alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, phenyl, naphthyl or phenylalkyl, R12 is alkylene, alkenyl- ene, cyclohexylene, oxaalkylene and R13 is alkylene, oxaalkylene, diphenylenemethane or dicyclohexylenemethane or -N(R9)-R13-N(R9)- is piperazinylene, are excellent light stabilizers for organic materials such as polymers and coating binders.
