ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing an .alpha.-(benzylidene)acetonyl-phosphonate ofthe formula: Image (III) comprises: reacting an aldehyde of the formula: ArCHO (I) with an acetonyl-phosphonate of the formula: Image (II) in the presence of a secondary amine of the formula: (IV) Image and an .alpha.-halogeno fatty acid of the formula: Image (V) or by reacting a compound of the formula: Image (VI) with an acetonylphosphonate of the formula II as defined above, in the presence of an .alpha.-halogeno fatty acid of the formula V as defined above. In these formulae; Ar is phenyl substituted; R1 and R2 are each either a saturated or unsaturated C1-C12 aliphatic group; R3 and R4 may be different or the same and each is a C1-C4 alkyl, or together they form 1,4-butylene or 1,5-pentylene which may be substituted by from 1 to four C1-C2 alkyl groups; X is a halogen; R5 and R6 may be the same or different and each is an halogen or a C1-C4 alkyl. The products are useful as intermediates for poly substituted phosphonate derivatives and as intermediates for the preparation of conjugated dienes or as intermediates for medicines.
