ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of mechanical machining of workpieces by heating the cutting zone of the workpiece with a plasma arc includes the steps of imparting a continuous constant-speed movement to the workpiece relative to a stationary heating source and a cutting tool. A maximum depth and width of a metal layer being cut in the cutting zone are preselected and the anode spot of the plasma arc is positioned on the working surface of the cutting zone ahead of the cutting tool. The work- piece surface is heated with the anode spot. The cutting tool is arranged at a distance from the anode spot of the plasma arc equal to the product of the cutting speed by the heating time of the layer being cut within the selected depth range. A strip of heated metal layer is formed on the workpiece surface smaller than the width of the layer being cut by a fraction of 1.2 to 2.5 times the selected depth of the layer being cut.
