ABSTRACT DEC 18 1984 The invention provides an electrode material and a method for its manufacture for use in electrochemical reactions. The electrode material com- prises bulk titanium oxide having a general formula TiOx where x is in the range 1.55 to 1.95. The electrode is titanium-free and hence may be used as a cathode as well as an anode. The bulk titanium oxide may be used as an electrode material in its own right or may be used coated with a suitable anodically active material or cathodically active material. Platinum group metals and platinum group metal oxides are particularly suitable coatings. The TiOx material may be made by the hydrogen reduction of titanium dioxide and the material may be made by hydrogen reduction to a final shape or by hydrogen reduction of a powder and subsequent compaction of the reduced powder. The invention is also concerned with electrochemical cells utilising such electrodes, particularly electrochemical cells involving the electrochemical treatment of a chloride-containing solution. The electrodes may be used as bipolar electrodes in such cells. By utilising the electrode materials which do not include titanium the material is particularly resistant to hydride attack and to acid attack.
