ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a system for in-situ decontamination of groundwater carrying contaminants in a generally horizontal plume partially or wholly located below a water table in a saturated zone under a portion of the surface of the earth, wherein the contaminants have an affinity for a gaseous phase. The inventive system is made up of a fluid means capable of volatilizing the contaminants to the gaseous phase, a means for injecting the fluid means below the water table on one side of the plume, and a means for extracting the fluid. The extracting means is spaced apart from the injecting means and is positioned on an opposing side of the plume to draw the fluid across the plume thereby enabling the contaminants to be volatilized to the gaseous phase and to be extracted with the fluid.
