Abstract of the Disclosure The invention relates to a thickener comprising a receptacle (1) in which a thickening drum (2) is mounted for rotation and which is provided with means for passing the mass to be thickened into the thickener and for discharging the thickened mass and the filtrate from the thickener. In order to provide an efficient thickening process the mass to be thickened is fed through one end of the receptacle (1) into the thicke- ning drum (2). Thereby the solid materials contained in the mass to be filtered form a filtering layer known per se on the inner surface of the jacket of the thickening drum (2). The filtrate separated from the mass to be filtered thereby flows from inside the thickening drum (2) outwards through the filtering layer into the receptacle (1). At least one barrier plate (9) dividing the inner space of the thickening drum (2) into subse- quent spaces in the axial direction is stationarily mounted within the thickening drum (2), which barrier plate is provided with at least one opening for the flow of the mass to be thickened and at least one opening for the air flow in the longitudinal direction of the thickening drum. The thickened mass is discharged from the thickening drum (2) through an overflow point (7) provided at one end of the receptacle. (Figure 1)
