Description

ABSTRACT A process for producing ?-L-aspartyl-L-phenyalanine methyl ester or its hydrochloride salt comprises removing the formyl group from the cor- responding N-formyl protected derivative, with a mixture of methanol and highly concentrated hydrochloric acid , with crystallization of the sparingly soluble hydrochloride; the process provides improved yields as compared with prior processes, and still further improvements can be obtained by holding the mixture at an elevated temperature for a short period and also by employ- ing hydrochloric acid of slightly lower concentration in the preheating step and then adding hydrochloric acid after the preheating to adjust the concentration.
