ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A control system for air-carbon arc metal removal for controlling the relative movement of a carbon electrode with respect to a workpiece comprising: a device for sensing the current of the arc between carbon electrode and workpiece and providing an arc current signal, threshold means for determining if the arc current signal has a value above a predetermined value for a predetermined amount of time for producing a command signal; and travel means coupled to the threshold means for providing relative motion between the electrode and the workpiece only upon application of the command signal.
