Abstract Copolymers of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with another unsaturated compound are obtainable by the reaction of an alkaline solution of a monosaccharide capable of forming an enolate with the unsaturated carboxylic acid in the presence of a radical-forming initiator, at a temperature between 60°C and 110°C; the copolymers are excellently suitable as sequester- ing agents, complexing agents and co-builders in washing and cleaning agents.
