TWO STAGE CHLORINATION OF TITANIFEROUS ORE WITH FERRIC CHLORIDE RECLAMATION ABSTRACT There is provided a multi stage process for non- selectively chlorinating a titaniferous ore containing iron to produce TiC14. In this process a portion of the ore charge is subjected to conventional fluid bed chlorination to produce TiC14 and FeC12. A second portion is subdivided and submitted to chlorination in a dilute phase chlorination step using FeC13 as the chlorinating agent to produce additional TiC14. The FeC13 is obtained by partial oxidation of the FeC12 obtained in the first stage and/or second stage to yield Fe2O3 and FeC13. The product streams of TiC14 are then combined for further treatment.
