ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a high density code for optical recording. Four bits of binary data are encoded into a 2/8 block code with the constraint that there be at least two symbol positions between holes or groups of holes. Additionally, a hole is never written between symbols. The resulting code is a two out of nine code or TOON code.
