Abstract: For manufacturing trans-1,1,2,3,4,4-hexabromo-2-butene by the bromination of diacetylene, the diacetylene is first dissolved in residual hydrocarbons derived from acetylene manufacture in a solvent containing hydroxyl groups. In a first desorption stage a mixture rich in vinylacetylene is first separated by means of an inert gas, followed by the desorption of a gas mixture rich in diacetylene with an inert gas in a second desorption stage. The gas mixture rich in diacetylene is brominated into trans-1,1,2,3,4,4- hexabromo-2-butene in a reactor in which excess bromine is provided, dissolved in a halogenated hydrocarbon at temperatures of 20 to 40C. The discharge gas containing bromine is optionally converted in a post-reactor with excess diacetylene in a halogenated hydrocarbon to render the discharge gas bromine- free. The bromination proceeds with the addition of water.
