ABSTRACT A choker assembly having an electrically conductive cable and latch means on the cable for slidably, releasably latching one end of the cable to itself to form a sliding, closed loop. An electrical device is provided in the latch means for unlatching the one end of the cable from itself. An electrically conductive attaching member is provided at the other end of the cable, insulated therefrom. An elec- trical circuit is formed between the cable and the attaching member, through the electrical device. The electrical circuit includes an insulated conductor carried by the cable between the attaching member and the electrical device. The invention is also directed toward an article handling system employing the choker assembly. The system is constructed to provide electrical power to the choker assembly at a certain location to unlatch the latch,
