ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Timing layers of reduced permeability for alkali are prepared by casting a dispersion of a cross-linked copolymer of formula I in an organic solvent. Such barrier layers are useful in photographic materials for the dye diffusion transfer process, e.g. if used in combination with an acid polymer layer as a so- called neutralization system. (-S-)x (-M-)y (-V-)z (I) in which S represents polymerized units of monomers containing carboxylic acid, sulphonic acid or phosphonic acid groups M represents polymerized units of monomers free from acid groups V represents polymerized units of cross-linking monomers x,y,z represent the percentage contents of the polymerized monomers as follows x = 2 to 15 mole % y - 75 to 97.5 mole % z = 0.5 to 10 mole %.
