- 11 - ABSTRACT This invention relates to a process for mononitrating 2,3-dichloro-1,4-xylene to produce 2,3-dichloro-5-nitro-1,4-xylene utilizing an aqueous nitrating solution consisting essentially of 80 to 98% nitric acid at 25°C-60°C and at a molar ratio of nitric acid to 2,3-dichloro 1,4-xylene of 3:1 or more.
