ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a process for tertiary recovery of substan- tially emulsion-free oil from underground deposits of medium or high total sal- inity but relatively low in alkaline earth metal ions. A 1 to 20% aqueous so- lution or dispersion in formation water of a surfactant which is a carboxy- methylated oxyethylene compound of the formula: R-(OCH2CH2)n-OCH2-COOM in which R is an aliphatic or alkyl aromatic group, n is a number 3 to 15 and M is an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or ammonuim ion is injected into the oil-bearing formation. Alkaline earth metal ions are added to the surfactant or dispersion in such a concentration that the phase inversion temperature of the system composed of crude oil formation water and surfactant is at most 10°C above the temperature of the deposit.
