ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for the preparation of the compound, (1a,2B,3B,4a)-cis-exo-7-oxabicyclo-[2.2.1]heptane 2,3- dimethanol carbonate of the formula Image by cyclizing a compound of the formula Image The prepared compound is useful as an intermediate in the synthesis of a compound of the formula Image wherein A is OCOCl, O-protecting group or CN and B is OH or OCOO alkyl. The latter compounds are useful in the preparation of 7-oxabicycloheptane prostaglandin derivatives which are useful, for example, in the treatment of thrombolytic disease, such as coronary or cerebral thromboses.
