ABSTRACT A composition which on polymerization provides a foam of high compressive strength and low thermal conductivity comprising a polymerizable resole resin, a polymerization catalyst selected from a mixture of an aromatic sulfonic acid and sulphuric acid, the latter comprising 10 to 40% by weight of the acid mixture, in a concentration of from 6 to 12 parts per 100 of resole resin and wherein a mixture of volatiles functions as the blowing agent and is selected so that the composition has an initial boiling point in the range of from 25°C to 60°C. The foams are used as insulating materials, particularly for exterior wall and flat roof applications.
