-8- ABSTRACT: An electrodeless discharge lamp comprising a lamp vessel (1) sealed in a vacuum-tight manner and filled with mercury and a rare gas, which lamp is provided with a core (4) of magnetic material in which a high-frequency magnetic field can be induced by means of an electric supply unit (5) and a coil (7) wound around the core, an electric discharge being produced in the lamp vessel. According to the invention, a holder (9) with amalgam (10) is present at the level of the coil (7), whereby immediately after the lamp has been switched on, the holder (9) is located in the discharge and the amalgam is heated by this discharge, mercury being released from the amalgam.
