ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A grill oven range for microwave heating and grill heating of foods has the capacity to categorize certain individual foods during heating as being with- in one of a plurality of predetermined categories of food and to use this categorization to determine and set parameters of the grill heating operation. A microcomputer monitors the output voltage of a gas sensor during microwave heating and the timewise variation of the output voltage allows the micro- computer to adjust the position of the grill heater in an appropriate position for grill heating and to determine the appropriate duration of grill heating from memory in accordance with the type or amount of the food and to displace the grill heater from the food when too close.
