A vaccine for the immunization of a verte- brate comprising a non-pathogenic microbe that expresses a recombinant gene derived from an organism that is a pathogen of or that produces an allergin of said animal where the gene codes for a gene product that is an antigen capable of being recognized by the immune system of the vertebrate and inducing antibody formation against the pathogen or allergen. Also disclosed is the use of microbes of the nature described above to produce non- living vaccines comprising such gene products essentially in the absence of other antigenic material from the parent organism. There is also disclosed another vaccine of the same type which comprises an avirulent derivative of a pathogenic microbe that expresses a recombinant gene derived from a pathogen of the vertebrate it being provided that the avirulent microbe does not normally exchange genetic material with the pathogen, to produce an antigen capable of inducing an immune response in the vertebrate against the pathogen.
