ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for detecting defects in an object includes a camera for generating a series of analog video signals each having a magnitude proportional to an amount of light received from a particular point of inspection on the object, a circuit for generating a comparison sig- nal representing a magnitude difference between two of the analog video signals, the circuit comprising a con- verter for converting the magnitude values of the analog signals to digital form and a comparator for generating a comparison signal having a magnitude representing a ratio of the smallest of the video signals to the other. The comparator includes ROM log tables for generating signals representing the log of the values of the video signals, an output signal representing the difference between the values of the log signals being generated and a ROM inverse log table responsive to the output signal serving to gen- erate the comparison signal.
