ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for manufacturing a magneto-optical recording medium. On at least one flat side of a nonmagnetic substrate, a storage layer of an amorphous magnetic material is applied which is formed by at least two starting components in elemental form or in the form of alloys or compounds. The storage layer has a preferred magnetic axis oriented perpendicularly to the flat side of the substrate. The storage layer is to make possible a high signal-to-noise ratio. For this purpose, it is provided, that a preliminary product with a sandwich-like structure of respectively adjacent layers of the starting components permitting a fast (anomalous) diffusion reaction is prepared where a respective layer thickness of at least the fast-diffusing starting components of between 1 nm and 100 nm is provided, and that subsequently the diffusion reaction is carried out at a predetermined temperature below the crystallization temperature of the amorphous material, for forming an amorphous structure.
