ABSTRACT In the process for connecting lengths of pipes and pipe fittings used when building or repairing pipe systems in chases, gangways or masonary chimneys it is known to use methods which join the pipes or fittings loosely with three sheet metal screws. In this invention, self stabilizing steel housings fixed to a split steel coupler are activated and locked by a bolt, split washer and nut assembly. By simply torquing the expand?r bolt with a screw driver the housing mechanism will transmit the torsional force to an axial force. This axial force will expand the split coupling in a radial direction. This force transfer will cause the steel coupling to exert a uniform radial force on the inner surfaces of the pipes being joined. The resulting pressure fit will lock the two ends of pipe securely and rigidly by friction. The housings and coupling may also be contracted to fix the pipes together by using a pressure fit on the outside surfaces of the pipe.
