A method and composition for the inhibition of growth of Salmonella is provided. The effective compos- ition of the invention is a class of fructo-oligosac- charides which inhibit the growth of Salmonella. More particularly, the fructo-oligosaccharides are sucrose molecules having from 1 to 8 fructose residues. This class of sugars is exemplified by "Neosugar" which includes 1-kestose, nystose, and 1-fructofuranosyl- nystose. The present method includes contacting Salmon- ella with the effective composition and can include feeding it to a domestic food animal. The present com- position includes the effective component and nutritive feed material.
