ABSTRACT This invention relates to a process for the production of a coating for steel pipes, this consisting of a thermoplastic material, in particular poly- ethylene, in which a layer that is used for adhesion with the pipe surface is applied to the preheated steel pipe and a covering layer is applied on top of this, both layers, immediately prior to application, being extruded simultan- eously in tubular form or as flat strips which can be wound on. The extruder head which is used for this extrusion process is heated to an operating tem- perature of approximately 170°C. In order to improve the effectiveness of already familiar adhesive agents and thus the stability of the coating, it is proposed that during the extrusion process air is introduced into the inter- vening space between the pipe surface and the inner layer, this air having a reactive gaseous component, e.g., ozone, which reacts with the inner foil and forms adhesive groups, e.g., carboxyl groups.
