-6- ABSTRACT: A tungsten-halogen lamp having a tungsten filament and a fill gas comprising gaseous hydrogen fluoride. In a preferred embodiment, the fill gas comprises gaseous hydrogen fluoride in an amount from about 0.1 to 2.0 mole percent; gaseous nitrogen in an amount of from about 2 to 4 mole percent; gaseous hydrogen in an amount of from greater than 0 to 2 mole percent and the balance selected from argon or krypton. In an alternate embodiment, the fill gas includes phosphine as an oxygen getter. In a lamp in accordance with the invention, evaporated tungsten is redeposited onto the filament more uniformly than is the case with lamps of the prior art. In a fluorine-cycled tungsten-halogen lamp in accordance with the invention, the effectiveness of the halogen cycle in maintaining the filament is substantially improved.
