ABSTRACT HYDROXYPROPYL METHYL CELLULOSE ETHERS USEFUL AS THICKENING AGENTS FOR ORGANIC LIQUIDS Hydroxypropyl cellulose ethers which have a methoxyl substitution of from 21 percent to 35 percent and a hydroxypropoxyl substitution of from 18 percent to 35 percent and a sum of the methoxyl and hydroxypropoxyl substitution of from 39 percent to 70 percent and which have a viscosity of at least 1000 mPa.s as a 2 weight percent aqueous solution are useful as thickening agents for organic liquids, optionally mixed with water. The hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose ethers having a methoxyl substitution of from 25 percent to 35 percent, a hydroxypropoxyl substitution of from 18 to 30 percent, and a number average molecular weight of at least 50,000 are novel compounds.
