14 METHOD OF CHLORINE DIOXIDE BLEACHING ABSTRACT Cellulosic pulp is bleached with chlorine dioxide in order to obtain maximum brightness per unit of chlorine dioxide bleach utilized. Sufficient caustic, such as sodium hydroxide, is added to the pulp and chlorine dioxide to maintain the pH of the pulp near or above the neutral level, e.g. pH 5.5 - 10. The pulp is retained at that pH for a suitable retention time, and then acid, such as hydrochloric acid or chlorine gas, is mixed with the pulp to reduce the pH to a desired terminal pH, e.g. pH 2 - 4.5. The pulp is then passed to a conventional retention tower where the chlorine dioxide reacts with the pulp at about 120° - 180°F for about 0.25 - 5 hours.
